Volume Gallery × Stony Island Arts Bank

For our inaugural gallery show on the 2nd floor of the Bank, we have collaborated with our dear friends at Volume Gallery to showcase some of the greatest established and emerging designers and artists from Chicago and the greater US. Open to the public during regular operating hours.

Design and architecture have been a shared language for Theaster Gates, Heiji Choy Black, and the founders of Volume Gallery, Sam Vinz and Claire Warner, since the beginning of their friendship. The Stony Island Arts Bank and Volume Gallery have long championed many of the greatest contemporary emerging and established designers and artists, bringing their work to the world from their spaces in Chicago.

In this group exhibition, artists and designers share a common desire to honor where they come from with objects of beauty and brilliance and of enduring meaning and substance. The many perspectives, cultures, and geographies represented in Chicago are brought to life here as these makers intend to better our world through art and craft.

Reopening Our Doors

We are excited to welcome you to the reopening of the Stony Island Arts Bank on June 5th.

Acquired by Theaster Gates in 2013, Stony Island Arts Bank was founded as a hybrid exhibition space and community center as a space for innovation in contemporary art and archival practice.

A two-pronged concept where art and hospitality coalesce, Han Cha and Yunomi mark the evolution of Stony Island Arts Bank.

Han Cha fuses East Asian teahouse craftsmanship and culture with the format and cuisine of English high tea, inviting guests to partake in a two-hour prix fixe menu, while yunomi is the new bar and lounge centered on the yunomi, or handleless daily cup, in Japanese ceramics vernacular.

Visitors are welcome to visit the Stony Island Arts Bank by acquiring tickets online or on a walk-in basis, with a recommended ticket price of $10, half of which goes to Rebuild Foundation, the community-based non-profit founded by Theaster Gates in 2010. Additionally, reservations for the tea room can be made via OpenTable via the link below.
